Potential OPT Job Timeline Frame
An OPT candidate needs to apply and all the necessary documents within a specified period. If a STEM student is applying for the OPT he/she may apply within 90 days after they file the application request with the Designated School Officer (DSO). STEM students get 90 days at the pre-completion of their degree but they will get 60 days for searching employment at the post-completion stage. The good part is the STEM students get the extension if they want to continue with their employment term. This period can be extended from 12 months to 36 months. But the application for an extension must be filed before 90 days of expiring the previous work permit.
An OPT student can only start working after they have received their Employment Authorization Document (EAD). It is in good faith of an OPT student to complete the process within the OPT timeline. Even if the STEM student has filed for an extension in the term of their work permit and they have filed the extension application 90 days before the expiration of their previous authorization. They will get a permit to work for 180 days, from United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Although if the application for an extension of the work permit is rejected the period of extension lapses.
For a non-STEM student, the OPT student must apply the request to get Optional Practical Training with the DSO. At the Pre-completion stage, the student can apply within 90 days of completing the academic course of one year. At the post-completion stage, the student may apply before 90 days of completing the course. But he/she cannot apply after 60 days of completing the course. If the EAD is terminated it will not affect the F1 visa status of the OPT student, but they will not be allowed to work while they are not authorized by the authorities.
The F1 visa holders are entitled to get the work permit only if they are international students, enrolled in any full-time degree or academic course. The college or university in which they are enrolled must be based in the USA. Along with all the requirements of getting the opportunity to work while they are enrolled in any course or degree, it is essential to follow the OPT timeline. Students need to be competitive and high-spirited while they are searching for work. They must show the potential to have an impressive profile.
OPT students can work for more than one employer at a time. They can work full-time, part-time, short-term hire and on a contractual basis. This depends on the discretion of the employer for whom they are working. The offered employment might be paid or unpaid. With proper guidance and vigilance OPT students can secure employment on good terms at a decent place. For good guidance, they must consult reliable online forums like OPTnation.
